Northbound walkers reach the Conservancy headquarters through spring and early summer, are photographed, and have the picture numbered in the order they arrived.
UnsplashBetween roughly April and July, and most heavily in May and June, the Appalachian Trail passes through Harpers Ferry as a moving population rather than as a line on a map.
Northbound thru-hikers who started at Springer Mountain in Georgia reach the town after months of walking, and they climb Camp Hill to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters at 799 Washington Street. There they are photographed. The photographs are signed and numbered in the order hikers arrive through the season and kept on file, so a walker knows they were the four-hundredth of the year to get this far. For a lot of people on the trail it is a more meaningful milestone than any summit.
The Conservancy has been headquartered here for decades, which is why the town functions as the administrative centre of a 2,000-mile footpath.
It is worth being precise about the thing everyone repeats. Harpers Ferry is the trail's psychological midpoint — the park uses that exact word — and not its measured halfway point. The official halfway mark sits in southern Pennsylvania and moves slightly each year as sections are rerouted and the total mileage is recalculated. Northbound hikers count down to Harpers Ferry through Virginia because it feels like the turn, not because a surveyor said so.
For visitors, spring is the season to see the trail working. The route runs down through the lower town along the streets and crosses the Potomac on the footbridge beside the railway bridge before joining the C&O Canal towpath, which means you can walk on the Appalachian Trail here in ordinary shoes without meaning to.
A note on manners, because it comes up. Thru-hikers in May have walked something like a thousand miles and are carrying their entire life on their back. They are usually happy to talk and are not exhibits. Buying a stranger a meal is a long-standing trail custom; photographing one without asking is not.
Southbound hikers appear later in the year in far smaller numbers, and the town is quiet on the trail front from August onwards.
Hiker volumes vary year to year with weather and with start-date patterns. The Conservancy publishes current visitor centre information; check before planning a visit around it.
SourcingAppalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters location and the hiker photograph custom per the Conservancy; the psychological-midpoint description is the National Park Service's own wording. Hiker volumes vary annually.

Seasonal
A bright, warm day after heavy rain upstream is exactly when trips come off. The river here is fed by a long valley and it rises well after the sky has cleared.

Seasonal
Buses run every ten to fifteen minutes from nine in the morning. What changes is the end of the day, and it changes on a single night in autumn.

Seasonal
Eight dates carry no entrance charge this year. One of them falls in peak leaf season, which makes it both the best value and the worst queue of the autumn.

Trails & Rivers Editor
Emmett section-hiked the Appalachian Trail through four states before he wrote about it and has guided on the lower Shenandoah. He covers Maryland Heights and the towpath, the footbridge corridor, and the rafting and tubing season. He reads a river gauge before a forecast, and he will tell you when a climb is beyond what a group can manage.
