Harpers Ferry is one of the few national parks in the country with a railway platform inside its boundary. The station at 120 Potomac Street sits in the historic lower town, a couple of minutes from John Brown's Fort. Arriving by train skips the parking lot and the shuttle entirely.
The catch is the timetable, and it is a bigger catch than most people expect.
MARC's Brunswick Line runs on weekdays only. There is no Saturday or Sunday service at all. The line exists to carry commuters from Martinsburg, Duffields, Brunswick and Frederick into Washington Union Station and home again, and its roughly nine trains each way run in the peak direction: toward Washington through the morning, away from it through the evening.
For someone living in Jefferson County who wants a day in Washington, that is close to ideal. For someone in Washington who wants a day in Harpers Ferry, the railway is pointing the wrong way — and on a weekend it is not running.
Amtrak fills the gap with one train each way, daily. The Floridian, which runs between Chicago and Miami via Washington, serves this stop. Anyone working from an older guide should note that this service replaced the Capitol Limited here after the Floridian launched in November 2024; guides still naming the Capitol Limited are out of date.
Because the Floridian covers a very long route, it is also the service most likely to be running behind by the time it reaches West Virginia, which matters far more on the return leg than the outbound one. Miss it and the next one is twenty-four hours away. There is no late bus out of a town of 269 people.
Two workarounds are worth knowing. On a weekday, check the current MARC timetable for any service running against the peak, because the pattern is revised periodically. And the overnight version — out on a Friday evening MARC train, which is the direction the railway is built for, back on a Monday morning inbound service — gives you a full weekend at commuter fares.
One further practical point: the station is listed as not accessible, with platform access by stairs and no step-free boarding.
Timetables change. Confirm current schedules with MARC and Amtrak before travelling.
